What to Do When Job Boards Aren't Working: 9 Smart Strategies That Actually Move the Needle

Rethinking your job search when the boards aren't cutting it.

You’ve spent hours perfecting your resume, scrolling through job boards, and firing off applications. And yet... crickets.

If you’re feeling stuck, you’re not alone. Many of my coaching clients hit this same wall—where the job boards go quiet, the rejections start piling up, and self-doubt starts creeping in. The good news? There are other, more effective ways to find your next role.

Here are 9 smart strategies that go beyond the job boards and help you regain momentum:

1. Tap Into Your Network (Yes, Even If You Hate Networking) Over 80% of job opportunities come from connections, not postings. Reach out to former colleagues, friends, classmates, or anyone in your LinkedIn network. Ask for a short catch-up call or a warm intro. You don’t need to beg for a job—you just need to be visible.

2. Get Crystal Clear on What You Want Applying for "anything" often leads to nothing. Take time to define your ideal role: What kind of work energizes you? What are your non-negotiables? Clarity makes your applications sharper—and your conversations more confident.

3. Rethink Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile If you haven’t updated your LinkedIn headline or resume in a while, now is the time. Use tools like Jobscan or Teal to ensure your materials match the roles you’re targeting. Be specific, confident, and results-oriented.

4. Start Having Informational Interviews These low-pressure conversations give you insight into companies, industries, and career paths—while also expanding your network. Most jobs are never posted publicly, but they do get talked about over coffee.

5. Use AI Tools to Streamline and Target AI tools like Simplify.jobs, Careerflow, Jobscan and Teal can help you tailor resumes, autofill applications, and track everything in one place. They’re not a magic wand—but they make the process far more manageable.

6. Create a Weekly Routine (and Take Breaks!) Set a schedule for job search tasks: researching companies, networking, applying, and follow-ups. But equally important? Scheduling breaks. Job search burnout is real, and rest is part of the process. Make time for things that bring you joy—whether that's hiking, painting, or simply laughing with a friend. Fun isn't a distraction; it's fuel for showing up as your best self.

7. Explore New Avenues Don’t rely on just one source. Sign up for industry-specific job newsletters, join niche communities or Slack groups, or follow companies directly on LinkedIn. Look at nonprofit and startup job boards, too.

8. Build Your Visibility Don’t just search—be searchable. Share a post on LinkedIn about your job search goals, write a brief career story, or comment on industry conversations. Someone in your network may have the opportunity you’re looking for.

9. Strengthen Your Mindset Rejections aren’t personal. Not hearing back doesn’t mean you’re not worthy. Stay connected to your values, your vision, and your strengths. This process is hard—but it doesn’t define you.

Final Thoughts

If job boards aren’t working, it doesn’t mean you’re not working. It just means it’s time to try a new path. These strategies have helped my clients break through the noise and land roles that truly fit who they are. Try a few, trust the process, and keep showing up. The right opportunity is out there—and it will find you when you’re aligned, prepared, and visible.

You're feeling lost, right? You're staring at your future, and it's a big, scary blank. I get it. I've been there. I climbed the corporate ladder, thinking that was the golden key to happiness. But let me tell you, it wasn't. I hit a wall, hard. And that's when I decided to jump off.

I ditched my 30+ year high power career, packed my bags, and found myself in India, doing yoga. Yeah, yoga! And then I hiked through Turkey, feeling the wind on my face, the earth beneath my feet. It was terrifying, exhilarating, and life changing. I discovered my purpose, my peace, my health, and, most importantly, my true self.

I know what it’s like to struggle and face life’s curveballs. I’ve worked my way through college while juggling a full-time job, raised my daughter, navigated divorce, and found love again. I’ve been outsourced, survived multiple mergers and acquisitions, and faced challenges that pushed me to grow in ways I never imagined.

Now, I'm here to help you navigate your life transitions. My mission? To guide you in uncovering your core values, finding balance, and breaking free from what's holding you back. I'm not just talking the talk; I've walked the walk.

Together, we'll set powerful goals, embrace vulnerability as your superpower, and create a life that truly resonates with who you are. This isn't just guidance; it's about making a lasting impact on your life—one filled with clarity, purpose, and joy.

Let’s get started on this journey together!
